One thing this op-ed barely barely touches upon is the role of race and ethnicity in these geographical differences. What does Norway have in common with Iowa and other upper midwestern states with high success rates? This is the third rail of any discussion about the problems with American education. I'm very happy to be posting this with my identity more or less concealed. That said, Iowa is a very nice state that values and encourages education. At long last Iowa's support of education, financial and otherwise, seems to be paying off in terms of attracting modern business and in other ways.
