According to this morning's Inside Higher Ed:
President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan...[nominated]...Chancellor Martha J. Kanter of Foothill-De Anza Community College District, as U.S. under secretary of education, which is the second- or third-highest ranking position in the Education Department.Ms. Kanter's new job responsibilities will include:
oversee[ing] policies, programs, and activities related to postsecondary education, vocational and adult education, and federal student aid.Kanter's community college experience appears to signal that the Obama administration plans to enhance the role of the nation's community colleges in educating the population.
