Perhaps I'm Not Entrepreneurial Enough

by Andrew Gillen

Edububble tracks down this quote from Apple's Steve Jobs:
I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
The weird part is, this is a quote from a speech given at... a college graduation ceremony.

I'm glad the Steve Jobs had the drive and good fortune to found Apple after he aimlessly dropped out of school.

However, this will not be the fate of most college dropouts. Most of them will just go on to be ... college dropouts.

Wonder of wonders! And it actually sounds like Cowboy got quite a lot out of college.

As for learning most over the years from relatives, friends, and work associates -- sure, isn't that what you'd expect? After all, college is only a small part of one's lifetime.

It is a time, though, when one has unique opportunities to learn a number of different kinds of things. This will vary from person to person. It should not be squandered on partying, or on learning fluff.
