University Bureaucracy Op-Ed

by Daniel L. Bennett

I have an op-ed on university bureaucracy in the July 13th edition of Forbes Magazine. Pick up a copy at your local newsstand or read it online here.

The part about growing administrative and support staffs is on the mark.

On the other, the stuff about salaries for deans is hilarious. (Deans, by the way, count as "Academic Support", not "Administration").

$190K for a dean at a doctoral university high?

Positions with comparable responsibility in the commercial world pay much more, by as much as a factor of 10.

$190K isn't even especially high for some faculty slots.

Take law. $190K is peanuts compared to what even garden-variety partners make in big urban law firms.
